David Joseph was born on the tiny island of Antigua, West Indies. As a child he was surrounded by people playing music and dancing, which he believes explains his fascination with both. About 14 years ago he was "dragged, kicking and screaming" to a ballroom class by a group of female friends. He ended up loving the class. He afterwards completed a teacher training program at Arthur Murray, and has been training, teaching, and performing ever since. David has a special interest in the connection between musicianship and dance. He is a gifted musician having performed professionally as a soloist as well as with bands with bagpipes and flamenco rumba guitar. His goal is to play 15 instruments and speak as many languages. He was a founding member of the band Los Morenos and released a CD called Moviendo Te in 2002. He is (still) working on his solo CD.
In 2002 and 2003 David was ranked 6th in world at the prestigious Mayan World Salsa Competition which is broadcast live on the internet. He has competed, and been a finalist in many other World Salsa Championships including the IDO World Salsa Championships held in Orlando and Miami, the IHSC Salsa Championships held in Miami, and the WSF World Salsa Championships held in Miami and Ft Lauderdale. David has been invited to perform and teach all over North America, including the World Salsa Congress in Los Angeles, which is the largest salsa event in the world (hosted by Salsa legend Albert Torres), the San Francisco International Salsa Congress, Vancouver and Montreal International Salsa Congresses, and in 2005 represented Canada at the first Mexican International Salsa Congress in Acapulco. David has been a feature dancer and choreographer on television, film, for events with crowds of over 50,000, and on international networks such as Bravo! Television. David is still active with performing salsa internationally. We are very lucky to have David as an instructor at Alberta Dancesport!
