    Dance Shoes 101

I am fairly new to ballroom dancing.  Could someone explain how to go about finding womens dance shoes, specifically high heels.  I see so many different kinds on the dance floor, but am not sure what to look for as a beginner.

I am not looking for internet shoe sites or other similar links.  Rather the type of shoe, style, heel height etc.

    Thanks, Wink

    Re: Dance Shoes 101

I have purchased 2 pairs over the last 15 years both from Masque which is down south on Macleod. They carry all types, sizes and heel heights. Best to try them on and see which are most comfortable. Ballroom shoes should have proper support and a suede sole. They can help you there. There are other places around as well and I am sure you will get more suggestions on this site. Good luck.

I would like to know if anyone can tell me the proper way to maintain the suede soles of my shoes. I have the little metal brush for the suede but not sure I am using it properly. I know that if I don't brush the shoes they become extremely slippery on the dance floor. Just want to be sure I am doing what is best for the shoes and my safety.

At the open house at The Studio last weekend, I noticed that the dance shoes for sale had suede soles.  Why is this?

    Re: Dance Shoes 101

To hazard a guess at two reasons: they won't ruin nice polished hardwood floors and if you scuff them up with a wire brush they have enough friction that you don't fall down while being slippery enough to allow a 360 or more spin.
“When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. It is clear that all the: ills of mankind, tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, political blunders, failures of the great leaders; arise merely from the lack of skill in dancing." Molière

I was wondering the same thing!! Where did you get the little metal brush, anyway? My over-analytical brain has also been pondering the question, "what is the perfect amount of traction, and how can I acheive it?"

    Re: Dance Shoes 101

I bought my brush where I bought my shoes. I am wondering if there is a particular way to brush them ie all in one direction, circular etc.

    Re: Dance Shoes 101

I was at Studio school of dance today, and I asked about suede soles, etc. She said that how often you brush them is partly a matter of taste. People have different preferences about how slippery they want the shoes to be. "Some people" she said, "brush them every time they're about to dance." She demonstrated the brushing action for me: it was short linear strokes, not circular. Hope this helps.........

    Re: Dance Shoes 101

I bought my shoes at Masque as well.  They gave me the same wire brush and instructed me to stroke one way, then back the other.  The first way raises the sort of filiments, I guess, and then the second way cleans the dust off.  I don't actually find the brush to be working all that well, though, so if anyone has any other tips, that would be lovely.
